A few weeks ago I talked with the Wyo Skyline [by the Rec Center] to set up a "Coney Challenge" pep rally event and get a discount on the coneys.

The Wyo Skyline was absolutely fabulous, so easy to work with and very helpful. They delivered the coneys and set everything up at the tables ... they even stayed around to watch the event. After the pep rally was over, I went to the Wyo Skyline to pay our bill only to be told that they were donating everything... about 100 coneys and even the gift cards that we gave out as prizes.

Can we get a shoutout for them? This was such a nice thing to do.

The Wyoming Cowboys OHSAA Tournaments begin the week.

The Girls Basketball Team opens OHSAA Sectional Tournament play Wednesday night at Withrow High School at 7:30 p.m. against McNick.

Pre-Sale tickets will be on sale in the Athletic Office on Tuesday and Wednesday. Pre-Sale tickets are $6 and Wyoming receives 50%. Tickets are $7 at the gate.

The Boys Bowling Team has Sectional play on Wednesday at Colerain Bowl.

The Girls Bowling Team has Sectional play on Friday at Colerain Bowl.

The Wrestling teams heads to Western Brown for Sectionals on Friday and Saturday.

The Boys and Girls District Swim Meet is on Friday at Miami University on Friday.

On Friday, February 17th, for the Wyoming vs Taylor game, the cheerleaders in conjunction with the American Heart Association will be sponsoring ~

The cheerleaders would like to encourage all fans to wear red to the game that night.

Please support our efforts by purchasing a t-shirt.

T-shirts will be on sale today through Friday in the cafeteria during the high school lunch times and also before the game on February 17th. At the game, you will also have the opportunity to purchase heart shaped cookies and/or give a donation.

The wrestling team finished second at the Cincinnati Hills League Championship held Saturday at Deer Park.

Boys' basketball loses to Madeira

The boys' basketball team lost at Madeira last night 55-33.

Ahmad Frost scored 15 to lead the Cowboys. Aquil Frost and Will Marty added four each, AJ Tribble three, Dawson Rogers, Marc Akinbi and Griffin O'Gara two each and Hakeem Frost one.

Next up: at Woodward, Tuesday the 14th, freshmen at 4:30, JV at 6, Varsity at 7:30.

Girls' basketball downs Woodward

The girls' basketball team recognized its seniors Thursday night and celebrated with a 51-19 win over Woodward.

Kathryn Policastro had 11 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots.

Shannon O'Hara led all scorers with 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds.

Mary Tess Irvine went 4-4-4, points, rebounds and assists.

Michelle Jolson had 10 assists, eight points and four steals.

Clara Rodrigue had five steals, four rebounds and two points.

The girls wrap up the regular season at 15-5, 11-3 in the CHL.

Girls' b-ball defeats Taylor

The girls' basketball team won at Taylor last night 40-27.

Michelle Jolson led us with 15 points and had 4 steals. Clara Rodrigue had 8 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. Shannon O'Hara had 9 points, 9 rebounds and 5 steals. Kathryn Policastro added 6 points and Mary Tess Irvine 2. We led 13-0 after the first quarter.

Next up: season finale home tonight vs. Woodward. Varsity only at 7:30. (This is a change as Woodward just let us know that they didn't have a JV team.) Seniors will be recognized before the game.

Upset - Contrary to the Roundup's prediction, Madeira beat Indian Hill last night 39-34. That is Indian Hill's first CHL loss since December 9th, 2008 when we beat them 48-41. In that game we came back from an eight point halftime deficit to win in OT. Alexa Levick scored a career-high 27 points, Olivia Temmel grabbed 15 rebounds, Jane Streeter had two assists and Anne-Compton Rodrigue four steals. Also contributing to the win were Nikki McKee, Bentley Rodrigue, Galen Graham, Sudy Graham and Hailee Schlager.

Boys' 8th grade b-ball update

The Wyoming 8th grade basketball team won its final regular season game 46-19 at Taylor, to run its record to 7-8, and evening its conference slate at 7-7. A total team effort led to a dominating second half, in which the Cowboys held Taylor without a field goal, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 24-3. Nine different Cowboys scored, led by Hunter Lampley with 17 and Mikey Trimble and Mason Rogers with six each. The Cowboys host the second division CHL tournament next week, with a first round game against Madeira Monday at 5:45 at the Middle School.

UC's Jones 'That's My Boy Award' Speaker

University of Cincinnati football coach Butch Jones is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at the 45th National Football Foundation’s “That’s My Boy” award banquet Feb. 28 at the Westin at 7 p.m.

The award is based upon the accumulation of points in football achievements, academic achievement and extracurricular and community activities. The award will be announced at the Scholar-Athlete Dinner in the Presidential Ballroom. Doors will open at 6 p.m. with the dinner at 7 p.m.

The finalists for Ohio’s award: Joe Burger, La Salle; Sean Horan, Kings; Spencer Howard, Western Brown; Max Kadish, Wyoming; Brandon Kamp, Oak Hills; Sha’Khil Kelly, Withrow; Cody Lotton, Ross; Josh Thiel, Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy and Luke Wurzelbacher of Badin.

Bernie Barre, former Wyoming and Beechwood football coach, will receive the NFF chapter’s “Lifetime Achievement” award.

Barre announced Jan. 2 he would retire from education and coaching at the conclusion of Wyoming’s school year. Barre has a 317-108 coaching record overall, including 182-54 at Wyoming the past 21 years.

The baseball team is taking Valentine's day orders this week for Personalized fortune cookies that come in a gift box, and roses. In addition to a message, the cookies can be decorated in college colors for Seniors.

The baseball team will be selling at lunch all week.

Any parents that want to order for their kids, friends, spouses, etc, can order through their child at the high school or through Coach Chris Fiehrer at the middle school. They will have orders ready for Valentine's Day.

Boys' 8th grade b-ball team beats Madeira in OT

I received this update on the boys' 8th grade basketball team:

The Wyoming 8th grade boys' basketball team beat Madeira 43-37 in OT in its final regular season home game Monday, improving its record to 6-8.

The Cowboys overcame an early 9-point deficit, led by the scoring of Mason Rogers and Hunter Lampley. In the overtime, Bryan Richardson hit two pressure free throws and Sam Marty nailed two jumpers to seal the win.

The Cowboys will play their final regular season game at Taylor Wednesday, and then will host Madeira Monday at 5:45 in the first game of the season-ending CHL tournament.

Middle School Sports Recognition Night

WMS Winter Sports Participants will be recognized on Tuesday, February 7th.

Recognition of the Middle School coaches and athletes will take place between the JV and Varsity Boys Basketball games against Finneytown . Everyone should meet in the WHS Main Gym Foyer no later than 7 p.m.

Winter Sport Athletes will be admitted free to the game(s). Tip-Off for the JV Basketball Game is 6:00 pm and the Varsity Basketball Game is 7:30 p.m.

Wyoming Girls Basketball earned a #5 Seed in the DII Girls Basketball Sectional Tournament Draw.

Update on Gene Pitman

Brian Pitman asked me to pass this along:

First of all...thank you once again for all the cards, letters, flowers, gifts, calls, and kind words for my dad. His first few days of rehab were rough trying to learn how to take care of himself. I was with him tonight watching the Super Bowl and he was telling me about all the people who have visited thus far. He really has enjoyed visitors. He is still worried about everyone else. I told him he is the number one priority.

He has not received a date of when he can leave yet. His (personal goal) is in 2 weeks to watch his grandson Travis wrestle in sectionals. All season long he has followed Travis around the city in wrestling. He is going through wrestling withdrawl.

My bride and I purchased a cell phone for him. His number is 513-405-6286. He will answer if he hears the phone or not in rehab. His voice mail has not been set up though. If you do visit him he has found a love of Diet Pepsi. He said he was dreaming about Diet Pepsi in the hospital. The funny thing is I don't think he has drank Diet Pepsi in years.

He wants to pass along his thanks to everyone. He said if he had a student directory he could call people and thank them himself. I will try to locate a student directory for him. I am not sure if PSA has any in stock.

I will give another update at the end of the week.

Girls' Hoopsters Down Madeira in nail-biter

The girls' basketball team had to go to overtime when they won at Madeira on January 11th. So compared to that, last night's 29-26 win was a yawner. As if.

We trailed by one with about a minute and a half to go. Kathryn Policastro grabbed the rebound off a missed free throw and put it home to take back the lead by one.

Michelle Jolson and Clara Rodrigue then trapped the Madeira ball handler at mid-court, forcing a turnover which turned into a Clara layup and a three point lead.

Madeira came down and scored, cutting the lead to one. We couldn't score the next time down the court so Madeira had the ball and called a timeout with 18.4 seconds to go, trailing by the thinnest of margins.

We had a foul to give (as you can see), so after they inbounded the ball and started to drive, Michelle reached in and took the foul to burn a little clock.

After another timeout, Madeira was able to get a shot off from the corner but it caromed off and Kathryn grabbed the rebound and passed to Michelle, whom Madeira then fouled.

Michelle calmly sank both ends of the 1-and-1 with 1.6 seconds to go and then Mary Tess Irvine stole the inbounds pass to seal the victory. Phew.

Michelle led all scorers with 14. Mary Tess added 5, Clara four, and Kathryn and Shannon O'Hara three each.

The win leaves both teams with three league losses, but Madeira must face league-leading Indian Hill next Wednesday. Indian Hill won their first game, at Indian Hill, by 18. Our girls are now 13-5 (10-3).

Next up: next Wednesday at Taylor, the penultimate game of the regular season - JV at 6, Varsity at 7:30.

Weird Super Bowl Trivia

Sunday night's Super Bowl will mark ten years since the New England Patriots won their first, in 2002, with a last minute, 48-yard field goal by kicker Adam Vinatieri. Vinatieri is the great-great-grandson of General George Armstrong Custer's bandmaster, Felix Vinatieri.

The Regimental band was ordered to stay behind at the 7th Cavalry's Powder River camp and missed the Battle of the Little Bighorn (AKA, Custer's Last Stand).

In an award-winning 15-minute film entitled "Bighorn", a supernatural historical fantasy, Director Alfred Thomas Catalfo explores a tragic (unless you're a Rams' fan) 1876 alternative reality in which the band is annihilated with General Custer, kicker Vinatieri is never born, and the Pats lose the 2002 Super Bowl!

MS Swim Team Second at New Richmond Invitational

I received this update on the Middle School Swim Team

Congratulations to our Wyoming Middle School Cowfish for their outstanding performance at the New Richmond Invitational. The Cowfish finished in 2nd place with 341 total points, barely outscoring Cincinnati Country Day's 329 total points.

With a small squad of 16 Cowfish swimmers they performed and competed like CHAMPIONS!!! The Cowfish beat Cincinnati Country Day and Clark Montessori,whose same swimmers also competed at Countryside A Championships last week.

The Swim Meet started with....

The Wyoming 200 yard Medley Relay team of Bailey Skidmore, Madelyn Taylor, Gabriel Cruz and Zack Christerson finishing in 3rd place with a time of 2:23.14. The B relay team of Sean Madden, Lauren Fershtman, Madeline Judge and Erin Broderick finished in 5th with a time of 2:38.28. Most importantly, the 44 total team points scored for those relays was more than any other team scored in the Medley relay event.

Girls' basketball team defeats Finneytown

The girls' basketball team won last night at Finneytown 59-33.

Michelle Jolson had a huge game, dropping 30 points on the Wildcats. Kathryn Policastro was also in double figures with 11. Rounding out the scoring were Shannon O'Hara with nine, Natalie Burchard with five and Clara Rodrigue with four.

Next up: big showdown at home Saturday night against Madeira - JV at 6, varsity at 7:30. The game is essentially for second place in the CHL (neither team is likely to catch Indian Hill for first). Madeira is currently ahead of us in the league with a 9-2 record vs. our 9-3, but they have a game left with IH which should be their third loss. Therefore the winner of Saturday's game is likely to end with three league losses and the loser four. Come on out for some girls' hoops on Super Bowl Eve.

My father was released from Jewish Hospital on January 31st. He was in the hospital for 12 days. He is now rehabbing at Mercy Franciscan Terrace (100 Compton). He will be there for at least 1 week. Boys' basketball loses to Taylor

The boys' basketball team lost at Taylor last night 44-41. The first quarter doomed them as they went down seven early. They played even in the second quarter and got it down to a one point deficit by the end of the third but couldn't quite pull it out in the fourth.

Ben Kurtz led the Cowboy scoring with 14, joined in double digits by Ahmad Frost with 10. Also chipping in were Marc Akinbi with seven, Aquil Frost with four and Richie Irwin, Will Marty and Chris Bucher with two each. Ben led with 10 rebounds and Ahmad with five assists. Complete stats here.

Boys' swimming wins CHL Championship

The boys' swim team won its sixth straight CHL Championship at Mariemont on Saturday.

Highlights were Eric Lethander winning the 200 Free and setting a new CHL and pool record (the old pool record was from 1983), Pat Dierker winning the 50 Free and Jonathan Rutter winning the 100 Breast and setting a new CHL record.

The boys 200 Free Relay Team also won (Max Chou, Pat, Sam Rominger, Eric) as did the boys 400 Free Relay Team (Eric, Karl Ebling, Jonathan, Pat).

Leading all scorers was Shannon O'Hara with 12 points. Following her were Michelle Jolson with nine, Mary Tess Irvine with six, Clara Rodrigue and Natalie Burchard with five a piece and Kathryn Policastro with four.

The girls are now 10-5 (8-3) on the season.

MS Boys' Basketball Update

The 8th grade boys' basketball team split its games this week, dropping a 22-28 decision to Indian Hill on Monday and whipping Taylor 40-26. All 12 players scored against Taylor, as the Cowboys evened their record at 5-5 in what Coach Jeff Davis termed “a total team effort.”

The 7th grade boys basketball team also split its games this week, falling to Indian Hill 32-38 and beating Taylor 38-15. Jake Edmonds led the Cowboys with 18 points against Taylor as Wyoming raised its record to 7-3.

Both teams are in action Monday at home against Reading: the 7th grade game starts at 4:30, followed by the 8th grade tilt.

Boys' basketball loses to Deer Park

I received this update on the Middle School wrestling team:

Middle School Wrestlers Placing in Tough Tourneys

The Middle School Wrestling team has completed the two toughest events on the schedule the past two weekends.

Last week at the Madeira Invitational Tournament, four Cowboys brought home awards by placing in the top six. Congrats to Zach Van Fossen (5th), Justin Shields (3rd), Luke Kremzar (6th) and Dylan Kripal (4th). Both Justin and Dylan made it to the championship semi-finals before losing to the eventual champion.

This weekend the team competed in the JH Coaches Classic at Reading High School. Justin and Dylan were the only placers in their weight classes not wrestling for a Division I school. Dylan took home 3rd Place, losing only to the eventual champion from Harrison. Justin was the runner-up, taking 2nd Place, losing a well fought match in the finals to a seasoned wrestler from Mason. These are two of the best finishes by Wyoming wrestlers in this tournament in recent history.

Congratulations to Justin and Dylan, as well as the rest of the hard charging Wyoming Middle School Team!

The school season finishes up next week at the scrappy Bethel Tate “Old School” tournament.

Congratulations to the Wyoming Cowfish for an outstanding performance at the 25th annual Middle School Championships!!

The Wyoming A medley relay team of Andrew Derge, Christopher Rutter, Jonathan Prangley and Carson Burt cruised to a 1st place finish with a time of 1:53.77.Mariemont came in 2nd with a time of 1:56.01.The Wyoming B relay team of Jonah Engelharddt, Daniel Tighe, Allison Golden and Sara Washienko placed 8th with a time of 2:06.86 adding 22 points to our total team score.

The Wyoming B Freestyle relay team of Allison Golden, Lauren Metz, Sara Washienko and Jonah Engelharddt finished with an excellent 6th place with a time of 1:52.60, contributing 26 points to our total team score!!

A note from Brian Pitman about his dad

I wanted to share an update on my father, Gene Pitman. On Thursday my dad went into the hospital (Jewish Hospital) to have his bladder removed. He has battled bladder cancer over the last 2 years. He has had a dozen procedures. He has had over 60 tumors removed. My father is a very strong man, but it got to be too much for him.

He will be in the hospital for another 3 or 4 days. If you know my father and would like to send him a card or letter of support his address is:

Only family has visited him in the hospital. The first few days were extremely tough on him. He is recovering well. Different family members are staying with my mom (taking turns) so she is taken care of during this time. My family appreciates all the love and support thus far.

Wrestlers win 9th Annual Wyoming Duals

The wrestling team won the icy Wyoming Duals on Saturday. This is their first win since the inaugural 2004 event.

In order, they defeated:
Finneytown 76-0

Loveland B 81-0

Miamisburg B 41-39

Mt. Healthy 64-12
Madiera 51-16

Finally, congratulations to head coach Brian Pitman, now the all-time winningest wrestling coach in Wyoming history. He surpassed Tom Ritz with the win over Mt. Healthy.

Boys' basketball loses to Mariemont

The boys' basketball team made a run at Mariemont last night, cutting their lead down to four in the last couple of minutes of the game after trailing by 11 at the half last night, but we couldn't quite seal the deal and ended up with a 59-51 loss.

Ahmad Frost led the scoring with 20 points, including three 3-pointers, followed by Ben Kurtz with 17, Will Marty and Adam Crider with five each and AJ Tribble and Marc Akinbi with two each.

Next up: home against Deer Park on Tuesday, JV at 6, Varsity at 7:30. (No freshman game.)

Girls' b-ball downs Deer Park

The girls' basketball team won at Deer Park last night 51-23.

DP was only able to manage six second half points against our pressing D.

Michelle Jolson hit five 3-pointers on her way to a game-high 23 points, followed by Kathryn Policastro with 13, Clara Rodrigue with six, Mary Tess Irvine and Shannon O'Hara with three each, Morgan Cunningham with two and Natalie Burchard with one.

The girls are now 8-4, 6-2 in the CHL.

Next up: at league-leading Indian Hill on Saturday, JV at 6, Varsity at 7:30.

Girls' basketball defeats Roger Bacon

The girls' basketball team won at Roger Bacon last night, 65-14.

Michelle Jolson and Clara Rodrigue were in double figures with 18 and 17 respectively, Kathryn Policastro just missed with nine, Mary Tess Irvine had seven, Shannon O'Hara and Natalie Burchard added five each and Kelsey Brunsman and Morgan Cunningham two each.

Kathryn leds in rebounds with seven, Michelle in steals with seven, and Marta Stewart had our one blocked shot on the night. Complete stats here.

The 9th annual Wyoming Duals will be on Saturday, January 21st at the high school. Ten teams will compete again this year. The meet will begin at 10 AM.

The Cowboys, ranked 5th in the latest poll, are looking to continue their winning ways. The wrestling team, currently 7-5, will wrestle a total of 5 matches. The finals will be later in the afternoon. No exact time can be given, but it will be around 4 PM.

The wrestling team hopes to get some "new fans" out for this year's tournament. The seven seniors have worked hard over the last 4 to 6 years and it would be a great opportunity for them to go out in style at home.

Lethander, Rutter advance to SW Ohio HS Classic Finals

Eric Lethander and Jonathan Rutter have advanced to the finals of this weekend's Southwest Ohio High School Swimming and Diving Classic. The finals are tonight at St. X's Keating Natatorium at 6:30 PM.

The Classic is the largest invitational of its kind in the country, including more than 120 schools and approximately 3,200 competitors with preliminaries at eight venues.

Eric qualified in the 100 Fly and Jonathan in the 400 IM and the 200 Breaststroke.

The boys go into Sunday in sixth place; the girls in 29th.

Boys' basketball loses to Madeira

The boys' basketball team lost to Madeira at home last night 61-39.

We led at halftime 22-21 but in the second half Madeira demonstrated why they came into the game at 5-0 and in first place in the CHL.

Ahmad Frost and Ben Kurtz led the scoring for the Cowboys with 13 each. Dawson Rogers added nine with three trifectas. Griffin O'Gara and Richie Irwin added two each.

Next up: next Friday at home against Mariemont, frosh at 4:30, JV at 6, Varsity at 7:30.
